Mr Juvenal Shiundu, the first Kenyan Naval Architect, is a former Chairman of the Kenya National Shipping Line Limited and founder of the Maritime and Blue Economy Insights Limited (MARIBEI). He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in 1983 and with a Masters’ degree in Maritime Safety Administration (Marine Engineering) from the World Maritime University, Sweden, in 1986. He is an alumnus of the Ashridge Business School, UK and has attended many senior management and Leadership development courses worldwide.
Mr Shiundu retired from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in December 2019 as the Director of the Technical Cooperation Division, having served in various senior roles for more than 22 years at its London Headquarters. He actively participated in all the preparatory meetings leading to Rio+20 as well as in the main Conference held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012 and the subsequent meetings that resulted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Blue Economy concept.
Prior to joining IMO in 1997, Mr Shiundu was the General Manager of African Marine and General Engineering Company Limited, Mombasa, the largest Shipyard on the East African. He previously worked for the Kenya Ports Authority as Assistant Merchant Shipping Superintendent. Between 1990 and 1996, Mr. Shiundu carried out, on behalf of United Nations and the World Bank, many maritime related consultancy, and advisory assignments in Africa to assess, advice, inter alia, on physical facilities, concessioning, privatization and financing, training, and Regulatory aspects.
Juvenal Shiundu has authored and contributed to numerous articles and publications, and resourced and moderated at many international conferences and seminars. He has also appeared as a key Expert Witness to some Commissions of Inquiries and courts involving maritime accidents, including the ferry MTONGWE in Mombasa. He initiated and formulated the concept paper and action plan for the (Railway line, Oil refinery, Oil pipeline, Lamu as Free Port) ROOLA project which later became the LAPSSET. He is featured in the Kenyan book “Life Journeys: Scaling Heights – Conversations with High Achieving Men in Kenya”, Footprints Press, 2011 and contributed the maritime feature in the book “50 Years since Independence: Where is Kenya”, 2013.
He is a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, the Maritime Operations and Management (MOaM) MSc Advisory Group of the City of London University and member of the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic East Africa Skills for Transformation & Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP) Industry Advisory Board. He retired as a Trustee of the Apostleship of the Sea (Great Britain) in 2018 after servicing on the Board for nine years and received Apostolic Blessing from the Holy Father Pope Francis for his services. In December 2019, Mr Shiundu received the Freedom of the City of London Award in recognition of his services to international Diplomacy and Charitable causes.

Ademuni-Odeke is a professor of International Maritime Law and Policy and the CEO of Bahari Maritime Consultants. He has worked for: regional shipping consortium; regional ports’ corporation; an investment bank; and in insurance. He has consulted for the IMO, other UN Specialised Agencies, governments, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation and corporations.The consultancies involved heading: Fact Findings; Needs Assessments; Advisories; Legislative Drafting; and Consultancy Missions on Technical Assistance and Sectoral Support for Developing Countries and Emerging Markets for over 40 years in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, the Pacific and Latin America.
Those assignments included, but were not limited to, advising on: national shipping policies; restrictive shipping and trade practices; modalities for national maritime fleets; maritime safety administrations; ship registration; drafting merchant shipping, ports and marine insurance statutes; enabling secondary legislation for ratification of maritime conventions; agreements and treaties as well as accompanying regulations and rules for several recipient countries. His interests are expertise are in marine insurance, law of the sea, maritime policy, piracy, ship registrations, maritime security and the Blue Economy. He is founder member and Administrator of the Consortium for Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy (CONSMAR).
He holds an LLM in Maritime Law and a PhD in International Shipping Law and Policy from the Institute of Maritime Law, the University of Southampton. He is a Visiting Professor at WMU, IMLI, Southampton and Tulane. He served the UN at the IMO, the IAEA (Vienna) and New York. The author of several books, numerous articles and several consultancy reports, he has also organised and lectured widely and conducted seminars, workshops and conferences.
His continuing consultancy assignments include the training of judges, prosecutors, defence and prosecuting attorneys, naval police, naval personnel and maritime administrators in East and West Africa on Law of the Sea, criminal jurisdiction over pirates, maritime security and irregular migration by sea.
He holds the Lloyd’s of London Insurance and several distinguished Fellowships, Merit Awards and Membership of International and Professional Organisations. A keen amateur golfer and rambler, Ademuni-Odeke loves international affairs, volunteering, classical music, live theatre and travels.

Mr. Ben Owusu-Mensah is a maritime transport management and operations specialist with close to 50 years of experience in the industry. He has extensive experience in the maritime sector, across shipping management, port operations and management, maritime regulation, and coastal zone management. He is currently the Managing Consultant of Benom Consult. In this role, he provides advisory services to Port Authorities in West Africa in port operation and management, port reforms and concessions.
Mr. Owusu-Mensah started his maritime career in shipping, and worked with the State Shipping Corporation of Ghana (Black Star Line) for 14 years in the Line’s Commercial Department. He joined as an Assistant Traffic Officer and rose to be the Line’s Representative in the UK-West Africa Joint Service in Liverpool (1986-1990). In 1991 he set up his maritime management and human resource developing consulting firm, Benom Consult in Accra, Ghana. He consulted extensively for IMO, World Bank, and almost all the Port Authorities in the Anglophone West Africa, in Human Resource & Institutional Development.
In 1999 he was appointed the IMO Regional Co-Ordinator, based in Accra UN Office, and was responsible for assisting IMO country members (Anglophone) in the sub-region to develop their Needs Assessments for technical assistance from IMO. In 2001 he was appointed Director General of the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority, and retired in 2009 to go back to his Consultancy, Benom Consult.
He holds a first degree in Economics (University of Ghana, 1976), a Post Graduate Diploma in Ports & Shipping Economics (Arab Maritime Transport Academy, Egypt, 1981), MSC in Maritime Administration (World Maritime University, Sweden, 1985), and a Master in Business Administration (MBA, Cardiff Business School, Wales UK, 1999). He also holds Diploma in Coastal Zone Management from the University of Rhode Island, USA.
He is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, UK, and the current President of The Ghana Chamber of Shipping. He has served as the Chairman of the Technical Cooperation Committee (TCC) of The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and also a Member of the Board of Governors of The World Maritime University, Sweden.

Mrs. Veronica Maina is an Advocate of The High Court of Kenya of 26 years standing and a Senior Legal Consultant and Practitioner .
She graduated with Master in Laws Degree( LLM) with Merit, in Public International Law , University of London in year 2010 ,Specialising in International Law of the Sea and Gender Studies ;She also holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB ) Hons, from University of Nairobi besides a Postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law. She has also obtained a Diploma in International Refugee Law from International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) Sanremo Italy.
She is immediate former Head of Secretariat for Women in the Maritime Sector in East & Southern Africa ( WOMESA)made up of 24 countries , an organisation formed under the IMO INITIATIVE under the auspices of Women & Development programme. She has competently facilitated Courses in Gender Mainstreaming and different aspects of International Law of the Sea including courses within the Scope of Maritime Domains , Maritime Domain Awareness & different aspects of Combating Maritime Crimes through effective legal strategies . She has engaged in Consultancies with UNODC and International Peace Support and Training Institute besides having served as a Part time Lecturer at Laikipia University and University of Nairobi.
She is a member in good standing with Law Society of Kenya , Advocates Africa & The East Africa Law Society .She practices in the name & style of V.W.Maina & Co Advocates in Nairobi & Mombasa, where she has served as Senior Litigation Counsel . She has served for a full term as Council Member of South Eastern Kenya University ..She has also has been engaged in Training on Gender under Laikipia University under the Police Reform Programme and ,Co – Authored a Training manual for Long Distance learners on Introduction to International Human Rights.

Capt. Arne Loland is a former Radio Officer, Master Mariner and Port Manager with 40 years’ experience from Maritime Sector. He has long experience as Radio Operator from the Norwegian Army, The Norwegian Counterintelligence, the Merchant Marine and Norwegian Coast Radio Stations. Before establishing the JRCC (Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre), the Norwegian Coast Radio Stations acted as maritime safety and rescue co-ordination centres, and a central part of the CRS duties was safety and security monitoring. For nearly 20 years Capt. Loland has been engaged in Communication Services with planning, offering, and supplying Maritime Communication Equipment and Systems.
He has his maritime and navigational education from the University College in Ålesund, Norway as Maritime Engineer, which includes certificate of Deck Officer D1 Master Mariner. During his sailing period as navigation officer and Master, Capt. Loland sailed mainly on Seismic and Supply vessels, where special navigation was a central part of the activities. As Harbour master he planned and built new quays/piers, new terminal areas and new terminal buildings. Later, he re-activated closed fish-processing Plants including fish reception facilities, Cod liver oil plant and established Fish Auction Company.
For the last 6 years, Capt Arne Loland has acted as Port Electrification Expert, designing several Cold Ironing/Shore Power Systems for Norwegian ports, as well as IMO Missions on Cold Ironing.
He is Maritime Consultant on Maritime Spectrum to CST, Saudi Arabia, and MCA, UK.

Mr. Gilbert Mbae Maeti is a Transport Economist with over 40 years’ experience in transport infrastructure and services domains. He has been widely involved in policy development; projects preparation; and development of regulatory instruments at national and regional levels. He spent his early years (1978-1997) in maritime sector working in ports, and shipping. During the first ten years he worked in the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) as a policy and planning officer. He also took an active role in the development of harmonized port Statistics and Performance Indicators and the preparation of Short and Medium-Term Traffic Surveys and Forecasts
He then worked in the Merchant Shipping office, which was a department of the Kenya Government that was then responsible for policy and safety and economic regulation in the maritime sector. While in the Merchant Shipping office, he was actively involved in the development and implementation of cooperation programmes of the Indian Ocean Marine Affairs Cooperation (IOMAC) which brought together the coastal countries sharing the Indian Ocean. The principal objective IOMAC was the promotion of sustainable development and exploitation of the Indian Ocean resources including maritime transport, fisheries and other underwater living and nonliving resources
In 1997, he joined the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) as Senior Transport Economist where he was responsible for coordination of policy, and development of transboundary transport projects (maritime, rail, road and inland waterways); development of safety and economic regulatory instruments; and capacity building.
Specifically, he took leading roles in the development of regional cooperation in shipping and ports, coordination of the development and management of transboundary rail and road networks and the establishment of corridor institutions. During his time in COMESA, he was actively involved in the development of continental transport programmes through the African Union that include the African Maritime Transport Charter and the NEPAD led Programme for Infrastructure Development for Africa (PIDA)
Upon retirement from the COMESA Secretariat, he has undertaken consulting assignments for the UN, African Union Commission, NEPAD, COMESA, EAC, IGAD and SADC. He has also taken consulting with the Ministry of Transport in Kenya and a number of state agencies.
Mr. Maeti holds a BSc (Econ), (University of London, LSE, 1978) and MA (Economics) (University of Nairobi, 1985). He also attended courses in Port Planning (Narottam Morajee Institute of Shipping, Bombay, India, 1981) and Ports and Shipping (Arab Maritime Transport Academy, Alexandria, Egypt, 1990)
He has keen interest in intermodal coordination in order to enhance efficiency in transport and has written extensively on ports and shipping; corridor development; and the development of databases for both maritime and surface modes of transport.

Mr. Ahmed Hersi worked sub-regional as a Senior Political Advisor and has been part of the regional conflict mediation expertise in the IGAD region. He previously led and coordinated Regional/International maritime security efforts through IGAD and covered the East Africa countries, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean states.
Mr. Hersi is a peace , security and governance expert and throughout the1990’s has dealt with the challenges in the development field from the relief to development and conflict/preventive diplomacy in the greater Horn of Africa region. In moving the development agenda forward, Mr. Hersi advised governments on adoptions of policy reforms in security sector, and natural resources management, strategic planning and multi-year national planning and oversaw electoral exercises in the member states. Mr. Hersi also served the United Nations organizations ,UNHCR, UNDP and FAO. He has a passion for working with public sector at senior policy level as an “influencer” for peaceful, political changes and advocates for political and regional integration in Africa.
Mr. Hersi is a member International Association of Maritime Security Professionals (IAMSP) UK married with 5 children and he holds Rural Development ( Weitz Centre), MA in Peacebuilding and MA Maritime Security, Coventry University, UK.

Eng. Munyoki MWENDWA is a Mombasa based Marine Surveyor & Safety Engineer. He has over 20 years’ experience in maritime safety inspections, ship surveying both locally, regionally, and internationally. He was engaged, as owner’s representative and receiving Marine Surveyor, for the defunct Kenya Ferry Services vessels MV. Safari and MV. Jambo, in new build shipyards surveys.
In addition, Munyoki has offered marine surveys, inspections, and advisory support for offshore units in Ghana and Mozambique for the ongoing Oil and Gas Offshore Projects. He has been an active inspector/advisor for the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority on their Entebbe Airport Marine Rescue Stations for both takeoff and landing areas within the Airport. He is currently involved, in advisory capacity, for onboard safety systems survey and inspections for the Kenya Ports Authority’s marine crafts.
Munyoki is also a consultant and Part Time Lecturer at the Jomo Kenya University of Agriculture and Technology (Marine Engineering and Maritime Operations Faculty). On matters connected with Maritime Education and Training, Munyoki has been advising institutions such as the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic and the Technical University of Mombasa, through various MOUs.
He works at m/s. Sun Fire Safety Supplies Ltd, a company he co-founded in 2002, where he is the CEO/Director. Munyoki has various other professional qualifications, including a master’s degree in marine surveying from Middlesex University (UK), a Diploma from Lloyds Maritime Academy (UK), and is a Certificated Maritime Auditor in ISM/ISPS/MLC Codes. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Maritime Safety – Human Factors major at AIU – Miami USA. Munyoki has attended several industry CPD Courses in both ISO Standards and ship surveying practice both locally and internationally. He has been appointed by some flag states and Classification Societies as a marine surveyor and auditor representing them in some African ports
He has a professional passion in the maritime industry and is an enthusiast of IMO, the global regulator. Furthermore, Munyoki holds a BSc. in Safety Engineering from US – WIU and is actively involved in matters Occupational Health, Safety as well Lead Auditor in QMS/OHSMS/EMS. Some of the countries he has attended training courses in ship inspections and surveys include Turkey, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Belgium, and German.

Mr. Dong Chao graduated with a Diploma in Marine Engineering from Dalian Maritime University in 2003 and with a Masters’ degree in Marine Engineering from Shanghai Maritime University in 2007 and has more than 20 years of marine equipment service experience. He previously worked on board some of the China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) vessels as an engineer.
Prior to setting up Fastconn Marine Limited in 2015, Mr. Dong also worked with Goltens China. He oversaw commissioning and sales jobs involving Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWTS), Alternate Management System (AMS), steering gears, Nitrogen generators, shaft power measure systems, sonic cleaners, cranes, and level gauging systems.
Mr. Dong and his team at Fastconn Marine consist of senior service engineers with more than 15 years of global marine industry experience. The company, whose main business includes marine equipment supplies and commissioning, repair, maintenance, retrofit design and engineering, 3D laser scan, and installation supervision, has its headquarters in Shanghai and branch offices in Nantong, Jiujiang, and Zhuhai.
The vision of Fastconn Marine is to be the biggest service station for foreign shipowners and manufacturers in China. Their main clients include marine equipment manufacturers Optimarin AS, Water Mist Engineering AS, Infrafon AB, and shipowners Evergreen Line and Gram Car Carriers. By virtue of their experience and honest attitude, Fastconn Marine is highly appreciated by their customers and has signed various long-term cooperation agreements with some of the famous global shipowners and equipment manufacturers.
